Thinking Activity On Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet

# Thinking activity on Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet#

  Hello Readers,

I am the student of english language and literature. Recently we have  an academic movie screening on Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet, this is only full version movie, which has no editing or cutting of dialogue. This thinking activity is given by Dr. Dilip Barad sir to students during the screening of this academic movie.

These are the questions, which we have to answer after watching the film.

# Post-viewing Tasks #

  • How faithful is the movie to the original play?
As we know that any movie, which is adapted from any literary works is never exactly  as a original literary work, there are some changes, adding, cutting , but not exactly at all. Here Kenneth Branagh's movie Hamlet based on Shakespeare's play Hamlet, but it is very faithful to original play ,but still Kenneth Branagh's film version of Hamlet is sightly different from the original play. In the first act when king Claudius and  Gertrude entered in the Hall after they were wed. Claudius was supposed to address Hamlet first before he speaks to the Lord Attendants and before he gives leave to Laertes to go to France.
In Branagh's version the king addresses the  Lord Attendant First and send the off to Norway after he addresses Laertes.

  • After watching the movie, have your perception about play, character or situations change.
  • Perception of something is the way that you think about it or the impression  of things using your senses, especially the sense of sight, In my sight or perception about Hamlet movie is totally change after watching the movie, because, I believe that this movie will be boring and can not  understandable and very law perception about character , But after watching the movie my perception would be change. The character Hamlet has very strong willpower than my perception and the whole movie is well presented than my perception.

Do you feel 'catharsis' while or after watching movie? If yes, exactly when did it happen? If no can you explain with reason.
Yes, I  felt catharsis at the very starting of the movie, when Hamlet's mother's marriage with his uncle Claudius  whiout a tear of his mother's eyes for the death of her husband. Whole empire celebrate, only Hamlet feels pain and was herted. Second time, when the ghost of king Hamlet described his intriguing death by poison on his ear and how he feels at that time I feels catharsis on him.

  • Does screening of movie help you in better understanding of the play?
Yes, of course, the movie screening help me a lot in the better understanding of the play because before this movie screening, I have not proper concept and deep understanding about this play and also I recognized and understand the character Hamlet properly, his hamartia, his thinking,  decision level, and his soliloquies from the movie. And also known that what is play about in deeply. So, this movie screening helps me a lot to understand the Shakespear's play.

  • Was there any particular scene or moment in the movie that you cherish lifetime.
Yes, there is one scene, which I will cherish lifetime is in the very starting of the movie, when Hamlet's mother marriage  with his uncle Claudius without any sad feeling and tear of death of his husband king Hamlet, and when both king Claudius and queen Gertrude at the centre  of Hall with cherish and Hamlet stood between two chair of stage and see that scene with feelinghert hert  that scene or moment in movie that I will cherish lifetime.

  •  If you are director, what changes would you like to make in the remarking of movie on Shakespeare's  'Hamlet'.
I would like to do, If I am director of this film Hamlet. First of all I would like to do some changes on the main character of Hamlet, I would never make that type of  too much thinking or no action, in stead of that I would like to make him strong in mind level by that he is able to realize and feeling reapent of her mother  for second marriage and  realize king Hamlet's too much love as well as able to stood  against Claudius for his  crime as a murderer of his father , and able gave punished him in front of public.

  • In the beginning of the movie, camera rolls over the statue of king Hamlet out  side the Elsinore castle. The movie ends  with the similar sequence wherein the  statue of king Hamlet is hammered down to the dust. What sort of symbolism do you read in this.
In the beginning of the movie, camera rolls over the statue of king Hamlet out side the Elsinore castle symbolise that king Hamlet is now not ruled  over Elsinore but still after his death he is something, somewhere related with this empire. The movie ends with the similar sequence wherein the statue of king Hamlet is hammered down to the dust, that symbolsed the king Hamlet's desire of take revenge is fulfilled at the end of the play that's why he take a rest, but it also symbolize the fallen down of whole empire.

  • While studing the play through movie, which approach do you find more applicable to the play? Why? Give reason  with illustrations.

While studying the play through movie, I find one approach which is more applicable to the play is soliloquiz and moral aspects .the whole play goes through the soliloquiz of Hamlet and his moral  aspects that's make him too thinking what is true and what is wrong. In his room he speaks himself for what is right and what is wrong for that he arange one play to recognize. We can see moral aspects in Hamlet he can not kill Claudius because of having moral views.

Sairandhri by vinod joshi

  # poem Sairandhri by vinod joshi

#About poet Vinod Joshi:
Vinod Joshi is born on 13 August 1995 in Bhoringda, Amreli, Gujarat. He is a postmodern Gujarati writer and critic from Gujarat. His notable  works include parantu, a collection of Geet, shikhandi, a long narrative poem based on shikhandi.

# Sairandhri #

Vinod joshi is famous poet in Gujarati literature. His most recent creation "sairandhri", this poetry created in Australia. This poetry based on Mahabharata, the woman, who live a life with lost of identity.
Dropadi the character of Mahabharata has various names  like Agnikanya, dropadi, krishna etc.

Why he choose " Sairandhri "?

The poet vinod joshi said that " Sairandhri " is a woman., but when we see as widely  one woman, who hide herself and live life as sairandhri and also said that we all are live lives with someone, somewhere with hide ourselves.
She lost her own identity and live life as sairandhri that's attract him (vinod joshi) and he seems that it's symbols whole human beings, in day to day life we  are sometimes, someone, somewhere manage and make  our hidden identity. Who is when we behaves and who is in our hidden is the big puzzle.

#The form of sairandhri:

In "sairandhri" he mingled the Sanskrit and native Dialect. He depicted Mahabharata's portion of viratparv. During her agnatvas period she became the easiest(servent) of king virat's queen subeshna named sairandhri. During this period pandava(his husbands) live also in that palaca in spite of that she can not meet, even she can not represent herself.
One woman, whose creation or birth is for to became the Hastinapur's queen, who is now ordinary king's queen's servent, that is her personality's different aspect. She live that type of life like her fortune. Vinod joshi said that when we see in different, we all are somewhere, somehow manage ourselves and then far away from ourselves and our original identity is loss. So, that's why this is the poem of "lost of identity".

Sairandhri is servent but in real her hidden Agnikanya, Ojasvanti, is still not deid. So how she painfully suppressed that things she can not share with others.

When she isas a Dropadi, she can take help of Krishna and pandava and in various events Bheem also help her, but here he seems that her personality is there, she helps herself and protect herself and to be proud on herself as a woman, the poem should be like that, that's why in this poem there is no krishna, Bheem etc. In this poem only woman. That's why in this poem we can't find name as Dropadi, sairandhri and krishna thats only signified as woman. That's all representative of all woman , in this angle and point of veiw poet wants to show and so sairandhri is put here.

His sairandhri loves karna, this point of view is poet's own not taken from Mahabharata, Arjun is her second choice.

Metaphysical poetry

                  # Metaphysical poetry#

Hello readers,
I am the student of english language and literature. Here is my task on Metaphysical poetry given by Dr. Dilip Barad sir, the head of english department.

# Metaphysical poetry #

Samual Johnson was the first person, who invented the term Metaphysical poetry. While talking about the life of Abraham Cowley in his book "Lives of the Most Eminent English poets" (1779-81). He says that, in the beginning of 17th century.
Metaphysical poetry is extremely intelligent and witty. It is a little bit different from other types of poetry.

# Meaning of the word#

The word "meta" means"after". Thus metaphysics deals with the questions that can't be explained by science. It questions the nature or reality in a philosophical way. Metaphysics is about exploitation and philosophy, not about science and mathematics.

# characteristics of Metaphysical poetry:
The metaphysical poetry has been extensively commented upon by Dr. Samuel Johnson. In his biographical work "The -lives".Dr. Johnson try to interpret the Metaphysical poetry and it's features. Johnson find's following feature in the metaphysical poetry of Donne and his school.

1. Theme:
Metaphysical poetry is spiritual and has often religious themes. Moreover, it focuses on love, as the Union of soul.

2 literary Devices:
Metaphysical poetry uses metaphors, puns, paradoxes and meter to create drama and tention. In addition, Metaphysical poetry uses scientific, medical andlegal words and phrases to create arguments about the philosophical aspect of life.

3 unclarity:
Metaphysical poetry is considered highly ambiguous and obscure due to high intellect and knowledge of metaphysical poets. The poetry is greatly challenging to understand at the first reading. It needs full concentration and full attention to getting to the roots of the matter.

4. Metaphysical conceits:
A significant feature of the metaphysical poetry is the use of metaphysical conceits. It is the unique quality of metaphysical poetry. A conceits is a comparison of two dissimilar things, which may have very little in common. E. g. Abraham Cowley in his poem " The mistress " Compares his love for ladies to his habit of traveling in various countries of the world.

5. Wit:
Metaphysical wit is also a noteworthy feature of metaphysical poetry. Metaphysical wit is the expression of one's idea and thought, using aptly and technical, the words and various figures of speech in such a manner as to provide pleasure to the reader. John Donne is called the " Monarch of wit"in the history of metaphysical poetry.

6. Platonic Love:
Platonic Love is another feature of metaphysical poetry. Platonic love means, spiritual love, which is free from elements of physical love.

   # John Donne and his Metaphysical poetry #

John Donne was the most original and the father  of the Metaphysical school of poetry. His poetry is
revolutionary. His style is original, His images are personal. He replaces passion, sentiment and sensuality with wit, elegance and realistic tone. He also used hyperboles.

Donne's poems can be divided into three goups, satire, divine sonnet and Love poems.

In Donnes  love poetry is highly dramatic and it seems he is talking to his beloved and is never sentimental. His poem "The sun Rising" Is a highly colloquial in tone and dramatic in presentation. Similarly "Sweet Love I Do Not Go For Wearing of These".

# Metaphysical poetry By John Donne:

  • " The Sun Rising ",
  • "Death be not poud",
  • "The flea",
  • "The Dream",
  • " Sweetest Love, l Do Not Go",
  • "The Ecstasy".

# Sweetest Love, love Do Not Go #

" Sweetest Love, l Do Not Go" analysis shows that it is  from the collection of "Love poem"  Of John Donne. In this poem,  he  is addressing to his wife Anne Moore. The poet consoles his wife. Poet was departing for Europe in 1611. This poem is an expression of those feeling, which he has experienced when he went away from his wife. Donne was gravely in love with her . It seems that she is unable to differentiate between parting and death. Death is also a  kind of parting from near dear ones; therefore, the situation of departing is also not different from death.

# The sun Rising #

" The sun Rising " analysis shows that it is famous love poem of John Donne from " Song and sonnet ".  In fact, due to this  beautiful poem, John Donne gained fame in the world of literature. The readers have experienced a new kind of poetic wit. Many poets and critics have done analysis of " The sun Rising "but none of them criticized it. Every poet, writer and critic appreciate the imagery, background, Setting and style of the poem. One of the main  reasons due to which this poem is famous by it's start. It opens with abrupt colloquil dialogue. Moreover, it shocks the readers the readers from its initial line.

  # Henry Vaughn as a Metaphysical poet#

Henry Vaughn was a welsh  metaphysical poet, translater and physican, who wrote in English. He cheifly  known for the religious poetry contained in silex scintillans published in 1605.

                                 #peace#

" My soul, there is a country
                    Afar beyond the stars,
                    Where stands a winged sentry
                    All skillful in the wars;"

peace: vaugham believe peace is spiritual. That it can  be found in heaven and from being ready for war against evil. Repeats the word 'thy' to emphasize that he is addressing his own soul.

Thank you.  . .  .

Post- truth :The word of the year 2016

#Post-truth: the word of the year 2016#

Hello readers,

I am the student of english language and literature. I write this blog  on my view point
and understanding of post-truth with an example, I hope you will understand it, so let's start.

# On Defining post-truth:

As we know that after much discussion, debate, and research, the Oxford Dictionaries word of the year 2016 is "post-truth" an adjective
defined as,
"Relating to or denoting circumstances in wich objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief" (Source of Oxford Dictionary).

# The term "post-truth" In politics field:

The compound word post-truth exemplifies an expansion in the meaning of the prefix post-truth-that has become increasingly prominent in recent years.Rather than simply referring to the time after after a situations or event.

In manymany election campaigns, misinformation and disinformation have victory over information. Facts are no longer considered important in campaigns characterised by post-truth situation.

People, manipulated by emotinal appeals, treat misinformation and disinformation as information.
Recall two recent events-The Brexit and the Trump campaigns. In both campaigns, emotional appeals and feeling, and not facts, where the factors for Britain leaving the European Union and the triumph of Trump.

# Here is an interesting example:

We can take recently example of banned the article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, of course it's beneficial  and worthy  for all, but  government said
That it's banificial for Jammu and Kashmir in many fields like job opportunities, sports, education system etc. But apart from this it'it's also banificial for other states also. here we can some see the post-truth.

Thinking activity on Doctor Faustus

Q-1
The play Dr. Faustus directed by matthew Dunster for Global theatre ends with this scene.

This is the image of Lucifer with wings and laughing, it's signifyed a lot.
This image is suppose of last scene, when the time limit of twenty four years completed, it's bad time for Doctor Faustus but this same time for      Lucifer is good because of he was going to got a soul of scholar Dr. Faustus. The wings of Lucifer     signified have a power and laughing as a symbole of evil.

Q-2
Is God present in the play?  If yes, where and how? If no why?

Ans:

Yes, God is present in the play, The play is about Christian frame work of the play, one can argue that true greatness can be achieved only with God's blessings. By cutting himself off from the creator of the universe, Faustus is condemned to mediocrity. He has gained the whole world, but he doesn't know what to do with it.

When Dr. Faustus took wrong decision the good spirit and old man try to persuade. That good spirit and old man represents as a god. First, there is the idea of sin, which Christianity defines as wits contrary to the will of God. In making a pact with Lucifer, Faustus commits what is in a sense the ultimate sin,  is the disobey God.

Each time, Faustus decided to remain loyal to hell rather than seek heaven in the Christian frami, this turning away from God condemns him to spend an eternity in hell. Only at the end of his life does Faustus desire to repent and, in the final scene, he cries out to Christ to redeem him.But it is too late for him to repent at last he believes and fevour Of
God.

Q-3                                                                             what reading and interpretation can be given to  this image (see the image of Daedalus and Icarus) with reference to central theme of the play Dr. Faustus?

Ans:3

Icarus, Daedalus's son. He was given wings to be able to fly.

At first evening went well, but after a little while Icarus got tired of just flying in a straight line. He began to try to do tricks and going down and down. His father told him to cut it out and behave himst, but Icarus was having too much fun to listen, and he kept on going up, higher and higher, suddenly he realized his wings really were melting!  He tried to go back down again, but it was too late.  His wings came apart, and he fell down, down down into the ocean, where he drowned. Icarus fell into the sea.

To interpretation and reference of this picture we can said that one who kept going higher and higher but at once he fallen down from that higher place, like Dr. Faustus get knowledge alot but from at higher place of scholar he committed action of sin and at last feel repent and his fallen down from higher .

Q-4
How do you interpret this painting?
Ans:

To interpreted this painting, we can say that this picture is about routine life of human being all are busy to their work, farmer is working in his farm, fisherman is to do fishing and shepherd is also busy in his work, apart from these we can also see that one man is fallen down in  the sea, but none of these workers can refeted and pay attention on that scene.
That's show that the fallen down of common man is not important in the world and it's ignored in the routine life, but at the same thing happen with higher man it became maga news and everyone considered that incident we can also refered Greek mythology, Icarus succeed in flying, with wings made by his father daedalus  using feathers sesecured with wax. Ignored his father's warning, Icarus chose to fltoo close to the sun ,melting the wax   and fell into the sea and drowned.

Q-5
Read this article by Bhagat singh. In light of the arguments mode by Bhagat singh in this article, can you re-write last monologue of doctor Faustus?

Ans:
If,  we  put Bhagat singh in the last monologue of doctor Faustus, instead of the character Dr. Faustus it's because totally different from this text's last monologue, because of Bhagat singh's character is very strong than Dr. Faustus. In last monologue when  Dr. Faustus's time period of twenty four years Is completed only one hour is remain at that time he started  to repent  believed in God ,even he making plans and argue for rescue his soul from hell,  but  If Bhagat singh is that place, his action or reaction totally different because of Bhagat singh is the atheist,  he didn't believe in God. He believes in karma,  when his friends said that"when  time of death is coming you started to believe in God " But Bhagat singh replied very strong against this things .In last monologue when  devil comes for taking soul Bhagat singh didn't behaves like Faustus he gave his soul  without any regretation and sad feeling because of he didn't believe in hell and heaven. He considered it to be an act of degradation and demoralisation  For such petty selfish motives,  he shall never pray.

Q-6 summarise articlearticles discussed in the class:
